Family Tree Research FAQ’s

How is the research carried out?

The aim of your family tree research is to get as far back in time as possible during the research time purchased unless you request otherwise. If you prefer your research concentrated on one individual, one family or any other area please specify this on your questionnaire.

ALL the family tree research packages make use of the following sources:-

 GRO (General Register Office) Index of Births, Marriages and Deaths (BMD) in England & Wales from 1837 to 2004

Census returns from 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901 for England & Wales

The Silver, Gold & Platinum family tree research packages may also make use of some of the following sources: - (All resources are subject to availability)

England, Scotland & Wales

Scottish Index of Births from 1855-1905

Scottish Index of Marriages from 1855-1930

Scottish Index of Deaths from 1855-1955

Which line is researched? Paternal or Maternal?

Bronze Package: Either Maternal or Paternal line, please specify on your questionnaire

Silver, Gold & Platinum Packages. Both, unless you have a preference and wish to concentrate your research on one line of your ancestors. Please advise on your questionnaire if this is the case.

Do you research any siblings/cousins located during the research?

Yes, Time permitting. If there are any individuals you already know about and would like them included in your family tree please ensure that you include their details on your completed questionnaire. If they are not part of your immediate family please use the comments box to advise their details.

Are there any guarantees that you will find all my ancestors?

No. Family history research is not an exact science, what can be found differs from person to person and is determined by several factors (registration compliance, availability of source documents, research time purchased etc). However, if in the unusual circumstances that we are unable to locate any of your ancestors after 2 hours of research we will refund 60% - 80% of your payment depending on which package you originally purchased. Refunds do not apply to research paid for by the hour.

How long will the research take?

Our aim is to provide you with your family history gift box within the periods specified below. Delays sometimes do occur especially during busy periods such as Christmas, mother’s day & father’s day, and if they do you will be kept informed.

 Bronze Package        Completion & delivery within approx 60 working days

Silver Package          Completion & delivery within approx 90 working days

Gold Package            Completion & delivery within approx 120 working days

Platinum Package      Completion & delivery within approx 180 working days

Am I kept updated with the progress of the research?

Yes. Time permitting, usually at least once a month. Please be patient if there is nothing to update. Delays sometime occur in waiting for source documents. If we have any questions regarding your research we will contact you. Likewise you are welcome to do the same.

What is included in the gift box and presentation binders?

Our current stocks of gift boxes are silver, gold or red with a tissue paper lining. All come with a co-ordinating gift tag. The gift box colour may change depending on current stock.

Your gift box (medium & advanced research packages only) will contain two or more A4 comb binders detailing the information found during the research time and copies of all the source documents located. Typically the binders will contain the following:-

Contents - A list of what is included in your binders

Research Notes – Notes of how your family tree research has been carried out, points of interest noted during the research and details of how you may further your research

Ancestor Book (Including Index) – This report is a written summary of all the information located relating to your ancestors which has been used to compile your family tree including names, dates, addresses, occupations etc and any research notes appertaining to the individuals in your tree.

Source Usage Report – A report detailing the sources used to compile your family tree and how they have been used

Kinship Report – A report detailing how every individual in your family tree is related to you.

Fan & Pedigree Chart – Both of these charts detail the main individuals in your family tree. For example your parents, both sets of grandparents, 4 sets of great grandparents, 8 sets of great, great grandparents and so forth

Ancestor Chart – A chart starting with you at the bottom and working back to the earliest point in history specified in your family tree. This report will include the main individuals listed above plus any siblings located during the research

Descendant Charts – A chart of all descendants of the male lines in your family tree. Depending on how far back your research has reached this could possibly include 4,8,16, 32 etc family tree prints

Index of Birth, Marriages & Deaths – A copy of all the entries in the BMD index located for the individuals in your family tree. You may use these index references to purchase a copy of the certificates listed

Census Reports – A copy of all census data located for the individuals in your family tree.

Your binders may also include some of the other sources documents listed in How is the research carried out? What is included depends entirely on the information located for your family tree within the purchased research time.

Dependant on the family tree research package you purchase your family tree gift box may also contain a cd rom which has a copy of your family tree saved on it. The disc will automatically run on your computer allowing you to view your entire tree.

Can I purchase a research package as a gift for someone else?

Certainly, you may do this by purchasing a family tree gift voucher or if the gift is a surprise you may commission the research yourself. Please be aware that if you are purchasing a surprise gift and you have a completion date in mind you should contact us before purchasing to ensure that completion within your required time limit is feasible. If you’ve left it too late for the research to be completed by the date you require we will send the recipient a gift card advising that research is underway.

Are there any geographical areas you don’t research?

Yes. The research packages are designed to include research in England, Wales and Scotland. Limited resources are available for the USA, Canada & Australia. Unfortunately we are unable to undertake any research for Ireland but this may be outsourced if applicable.

Will any other charges apply?

Possibly.

Additional Birth, Marriage & Death Certificates:-

The research packages include limited certification. Birth, Marriage and Death certificates are extremely important pieces of your family history and provide a wealth of information and clues to further your research. Ideally Birth, Marriage and Death certificates should be purchased for each individual in your family tree but this can turn out to be very costly. Should your family tree research not be able to progress without clarification from a certificate you will be informed and given the opportunity to purchase the required certificate and further the progress of your research.

 Extra certificates are from £8.50 each

 Other Possible Charges: -

 It is impossible to say where your research may lead until it has commenced and we will endeavour to absorb any extra costs in your research package price where possible. There will be instances where this is not possible and with this in mind additional charges may apply for the following:-

 Copying of source documents located at local archive offices (e.g. Parish Records)

Travel and expenses to locate and copy source documents

Obtaining source documents from other countries. E.g. Australia, Canada & the USA

Extra postage charges will apply for overseas delivery (Australia, Canada & the USA)

 The above list is not exhaustive and charges may apply for other items.

 If any additional charges apply to your research you will be notified and given the opportunity to proceed if you wish.  

 Do you undertake any research free of charge?

No. All research services and heraldry products sold by Your-Family Tree must be paid for in advance.
