Rosa's parents divorced when she was very young, and she, her mother and her brother went to live with her maternal grandparents. Rosa's grandparents lived on a farm, and there was a segregated school that was close to the farm. Rosa's mother taught African American children at the school, and Rosa attended the school as a student. Rosa continued to progress through school until her high school years. When her mother became ill, Rosa cut her education short and became her mother's caregiver. Rosa cared for her sick grandmother as well.
When Rosa was 19, she married Raymond Parks, a barber who was also a member of the NAACP, according to Biography. Raymond helped Rosa earn her high school diploma, after which she became heavily involved in the civil rights movement. Rosa also worked as a seamstress, and she was on her way home from a seamstress job on the day she refused to surrender her seat on the bus to a white passenger.
